A Bike Inn in Mount Vernon, Oregon, in which we stayed one night as the only guests. Fresh eggs and beer in the fridge, and payment by donation.
What’s to add here? Welcome to the rural mountain West.
The nearest sign declares this to be a “U.N. free Zone”.
How would you like to have your firewood delivered like this?
A transcontinental tourer on the Trail. Ben Wegdam is from Holland (“where it’s always raining”) was riding a custom Koga carbon fiber bike with Rohlhoff 14-speed internal-gear hub and Ortlieb bags (“they’re the best”). Ben’s blog (in Dutch) is at www.bensdroom.nl
We wanted to let you and other blog readers know about the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil beds. We stopped there on the way back home. and the scenery is quite spectacular. It is a 6 mile side-trip(12 round trip total) with the last mile gravel. If you brave the gravel, there is a grassy area with water, picnic tables, and pit toilets. The ranger residence nearby is off the grid, generating approximately 600kWh more per month than used(according to the sign). It is west of Mitchell on Hwy 26.
We picked up another pair of sun sleeves when we got back to the Willamette Valley. Hope you tried the pair we left with you, as they have helped us tolerate bicycling in the heat(no replacement for fluids of course, but nice to not feel over-heated)
